Macy Gray was born and raised in Ohio, and moved to California for college. She began singing in her 20s and released her multi-platinum debut album, On How Life Is, in 1999, winning a Grammy for her single, “I Try.”

Gray also enjoys acting, and has had small roles on several TV shows as well as movies, including Training Day with Denzel Washington, and Shadowboxer with Cuba Gooding Junior. Additionally she made cameo appearances as herself in films like Spider-Man (2002) and television shows like Ally McBeal. In 2012, she appeared in the film The Paperboy with Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, John Cusack, and Nicole Kidman. The film was released at the Cannes Film Festival. Gray was also a contestant on the ninth season of Dancing with the Stars in 2009.

2016 marks Madeleine Peyrouxs twentieth anniversary as a recording artist with the release of Secular Hymns, a spirited and soulful masterwork of loping, skipping, sassy, feisty and sexy tunes delivered in a captivating melange of funk, blues and jazz. Peyroux set out to record a collection of songs with their own hymn-like stories of self-awareness & inner dialogue, a communal consciousness & a spiritual essence. Here, Madeleine intimately renders tunes by seminal blues artists like Willie Dixon & Lil Green, gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, dub star Linton Kwesi Johnson, 3 renowned American composers (Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt, Allen Toussaint), 19th century composer Stephen Foster & ending with a traditional African-American Spiritual.

Recorded at the Parish Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Great Milton, Oxfordshire, England, Madeleine Peyroux’s eighth studio album, 2016’s Secular Hymns, finds the vocalist/guitarist delivering a stripped-down, largely acoustic set of warm, eclectic cover tunes. Backing Peyroux this time out are guitarist/vocalist Jon Herington and bassist/vocalist Barak Mori, both highly sought-after New York-based musicians with deep jazz, blues, and rock credits. While technically a studio album, Secular Hymns was recorded as if a live concert, a choice inspired by Peyroux’s 2015 performance at the venue. The result is an album that’s a 180-degree turn from her previous effort, 2013’s ambitious homage to Ray Charles, The Blue Room. Where that album framed Peyroux’s earthy vocals in organ, electric guitar, horns, and a lush orchestra, Secular Hymns feels like you are sitting in the front row of an intimate Peyroux concert. Here, Peyroux eases into the session, kicking things off with a supple, harmonized, Western swing-tinged take on John Greer & the Rhythm Rockers’ 1951 side “Got You on My Mind.” She then struts through Tom Waits’ “Tango Till They’re Sore,” imbuing the song with a wry sensuality that’s equal parts Billie Holiday and Marlene Dietrich. Despite the acoustic, minimalist nature of the production, Peyroux still manages to defy expectations, offering up a delicately swaggering take on Allen Toussaint’s “Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky (From Now On)” and transforming Linton Kwesi Johnson’s reggae anthem “More Time” into a something that sounds improbably like Eartha Kitt doing a cabaret homage to Bob Marley. Thankfully, it works, as do other selections including her more traditional readings of songs like the swinging Sister Rosetta Tharpe number “Shout Sister Shout” and her folky, sad-eyed version of Townes Van Zandt’s “The Highway Kind.” Particular effective is her bittersweet take on Stephen Foster’s parlor song “Hard Times Come Again No More.” A poignant rumination on life’s inequities and hardships, particularly those visited on the less fortunate in society, the song is a perfect fit for Peyroux’s throaty, highly resonant voice, an instrument that has only ripened in the decades since her debut.

Few Dutch rock bands are eligible for a six-CD Anthology Box. Most bands in the genre simply haven’t made enough albums. Hellose is the exception to the rule. From their inception in 1984 to the last show in 2013, Hellose has played a significant role in the Dutch rock history. Stan Verbraak (vocals), Arjan Boogerds (guitar), Ben Blaauw (guitar), Marchell Remeeus (bass) and Ernst van Ee (drums) had gained the necessary experience with Highway Chile, Lemming and Zebra already. Anthology demonstrates where the combination of their creative talents has led to. Janis Joplin was one of the most exhilarating performers of an era blessed with riveting stage artists, but all but her most emphatic champions must concede her recorded oeuvre is problematic. With Big Brother & the Holding Company she was surrounded by up-from-the-streets cohorts who were spiritually attuned to Joplin, even if they weren’t always musically in tune. After one rushed, premature effort for the Mainstream label, Big Brother hit the top of the charts with one of the touchstones of the San Francisco sound, Cheap Thrills. Barraged by critics who believed Joplin’s skills as a blues and soul singer were being squandered in a psychedelic setting, the toast of Haight-Ashbury went solo with the up-and-down I Got Them Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again, Mama. Joplin was hitting her stride during the 1970 Pearl sessions when she died of a drug overdose at age 27. The album’s posthumous release was a critical and commercial smash. Box of Pearls binds the 1999 remastered and expanded versions of the aforementioned albums and tosses in a five-track rarities EP entitled, appropriately enough, Rare Pearls. Much of Box of Pearls is brilliant while portions are badly dated, but it’s all Joplin. –Steven Stolder

A limited-edition five-CD box set comprising both albums that Janis Joplin made with Big Brother & the Holding Company (Cheap Thrills and Big Brother & the Holding Company), both of her solo albums (I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama! and Pearl), and a bonus EP with five previously unreleased recordings. Each of these four albums includes previously unreleased bonus tracks (including live material), and each is available separately with the same bonus cuts. The tracks on the bonus EP aren’t available anywhere else, and if you’re devoted enough to consider laying out for this deluxe box, you’re probably most interested in what’s on that fifth disc. There are a couple of Cheap Thrills outtakes, “It’s a Deal” and “Crazy Once You Know How,” with a garagey feel and some typically scorching, uninhibited Big Brother lead guitar; it can be seen why they may not have been deemed strong enough for the album, but they’re pretty cool to have. The live versions of “Maybe” (April 1969) and “Raise Your Hand” (October 1969) are OK, but not essential; of greater curiosity is the raw live charge through “Bo Diddley” (also October 1969). In the original long-box shaped release, each of the CDs is packaged in a mini-LP-type jacket, which would be really cool except for the fact that, cheapskates that Sony management is, none has an inner-sleeve, so the CDs tend to roll out of the sleeve once they’re unsealed, unless you put them back in the box very carefully; additionally, the producers didn’t re-create the gatefold design of Cheap Thrills; there are two subsequent versions of the set, a domestic wide CD-sized box containing full, jewel-cased versions of the five discs, and a Japanese version in mini-LP sleeves (with inner sleeves) and with two accompanying booklets. Note that this box does not include a good deal of material that has shown up on the Janis box, the Janis movie soundtrack, In Concert, and Farewell Song, so it’s not a complete collection of Joplin’s recordings.
