Little River Band is an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1975. They were the first Australian rock group to enjoy sustained commercial success in the United States. 2016 ten CD set. Trials Of Eyeliner is the definitive overview of Marc Almond’s career, and the fact that Almond himself has personally curated the collection, allied to the 189-strong track listing, suggests that this is no exaggeration. Neal X, Almond’s longstanding writing partner/musical director (and former Sigue Sigue Sputnik guitarist), supervised mastering of the tracks recorded over five decades between 1979 and 2016. This anthology is divided into three themed sections. History fills the first four discs with 72 of Almond’s favorite album tracks and B-sides, from Soft Cell’s “Youth” to the song that gave this super deluxe set it’s name: “Trials of Eyeliner”. Singles gathers together all of Marc’s official Soft Cell, Mambas and solo singles in (mainly) chronological order for the first time. The last three CDs consists of Gems – fan-only releases, one-off collaborations, soundtrack contributions etc. – and includes 18 tracks previously unreleased from Marc’s own collection plus many more hard-to-find rarities and songs making their debut in the CD/digital format. The ten CDs are housed in two six-page gatefold disc holders within a 240mm-square slipcase, and the music is complemented by a 64-page hardcover book featuring loads of photos and imagery from Almond’s own archive and an interview/essay by Alexis Petridis. Artwork for the cover and elsewhere within the package is by renowned graphic artist Stefan Fhler.

Rafael Kubelik’s highly chromatic, poetic Mahler recordings have been staples in Deutsche Grammophon’s catalogue since their inception. Tempos overall tend to be quicker than the norm (Symphony No. 8 for instance fits conveniently on one CD), yet never at the expense of glossing over the composers renowned wealth of inner details. Many Mahler aficionados still regard Kubelik’s readings here of the Symphonies No. 1 and No. 7 as reference recordings. Distinguished soloists include Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Edith Mathis, Norma Proctor, Franz Crass, and Julia Hamari. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra as well as the various outstanding choirs employed throughout the cycle couldn’t be more in sync with Kubelik’s inspired visionary interpretations.

„In many ways, Rafael Kubelik reminds me of Eduard van Beinum. For instance, both conductors revelled in Gustav Mahler’s distinct idiom and both (guest) conducted the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. But most importantly, they operated among their musicians instead of above them, had a natural aversion to a so-called superstar conductor status and served music first and foremost. Those qualities pop up constantly in these beloved, often lyrical and never overwrought interpretations that have held up remarkably well in the Mahler sweepstakes. The fact that these performances have been available for such a long time is an indication of their popularity, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra play with total conviction. Certainly the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Seventh and the Adagio from the unfinished Tenth in this survey match the very finest available. If you never had the chance to sample the Czech’s interpretations of his countryman, the DG Collector’s Edition is, luckily, still available.
Rafael Kubelik always had a wonderful way with the Wunderhorn period. The First Symphony in particular flows like a breath of fresh air, it’s alliance with nature and young love perfectly drawn out. Kubelik’s first movement has a remarkable urgency, his funeral march is aptly Jewish. Only in the long finale, where we have become used to a cataclysm of contrasting themes, Kubelik may be surpassed (not least by the Bernstein performance from Amsterdam), but it’s still a strong feat of endurance. I have never quite shared the complaint that the strings are badly recorded, but if you like a more supple sound picture, you can turn to the conductor’s live Audite recording which shares many of the virtues of Kubelik’s studio account.
The Resurrection Symphony harks back to Klemperer’s sober outing, but even so, I have seldom heard a more convincing account of the last movement, the Bavarian brass pulling out all stops, the music urgent and truly apocalyptic. In the Third symphony, the titanic first movement does not quite have the swagger of Leonard Bernstein’s legendary 1961 New York account, but the orchestra plays tremendously well, not afraid to make an ugly sound when needed. Kubelik’s generally swift and utterly lyrical Mahler Fourth still stands as a benchmark recording and is required listening for everyone who loves the piece. Comparisons with Beinum’s mono Decca aplenty, this Fourth knows when to relax, when to dream and when to growl. The slow movement (in one of the fastest timings ever recorded) is especially effective (as opposed to Tilson Thomas’s dragging 25 minutes), it’s unforced naturalness harking back to Bruno Walter, and, again Van Beinum. Elsie Morison, the conductor’s wife, may not be everyone’s cup of tea in the finale, but what she lacks in childlike purity is largely compensated by the warmth and affirmation of her delivery. Simply indispensable.
With the Middle period, we are drawn into Mahler’s complex world from a new perspective, Mahler’s ‘Sturm und Drang’ phase, if you will. I deem Kubelik’s efforts in this phase more controversial and not an overall success. Starting with the Fifth, which is relatively brisk and unsentimental, Kubelik is let down by his engineers, which is all the more surprising as this recording was the last one made. It’s not a bad performance, not by any means, but there are better Fifths out there that manage to linger on the mind for a longer length of time. Kubelik’s Sixth, in much better sound, with its breakneck pace for the first movement – which many may find a problem – is a blistering account. The Scherzo, placed second (happily!), is as demonic as one could wish for; the Andante flowing naturally and intensely nostalgic. The long finale, harrowing in the best of hands (and Kubelik’s is certainly not an exception), is again on the brisk side but never glossing over details. The closing pages define the word ‘desperation’. Even though I like the Sixth with a more measured pace, I can’t and won’t deny Rafael Kubelik’s greatness in this music.
The Seventh symphony, recorded near the end of Kubelik’s survey, was a distinct specialty of the conductor. I have heard and enjoyed three recordings under Kubelik, the first being this studio recording, the second a ‘live’ reading with the same orchestra on Audite, and a hard to find live New York recording which was lastly available in an expensive New York Mahler box. Some may find Kubelik too impatient in the first movement, especially since the opening measures are marked Langsam. I actually prefer the Czech’s straightforward way since Kubelik never loses sight of the long line. His first Nachtmusik sounds much more like a real march in the dark, his Schattenhaft is unusually intense. No one makes the Finale sound more convincing than Leonard Bernstein in his 1965 benchmark recording, but Kubelik’s reading is positively festive, with trumpets sounding especially piercing, marvellously cheeky woodwinds and a final peroration with bells featured prominently. This is one of the great Sevenths and every aficionado of the piece should own it.
I have never quite jumped on the bandwagon for Kubelik’s studio Eighth, fine as though it is. I was more moved by his Audite remake which featured a far more convincing interpretation and a more spacious recording. The Ninth, the very first symphony to be recorded in this survey, offers a robust sound picture. There are more wrenching accounts of this often recorded symphony available, and I never really got the feeling that Kubelik was in his element. The Rondo could do with a touch more abandon and I find his handling of the theoretically shimmering Adagio too fast, no matter how eloquently the Bavarian strings play. Kubelik was a great exponent of Twentieth Century music, and it is therefore that his account of the Adagio from the unfinished Tenth symphony is one of the very finest available. From the desolate opening measures and the frantic outburst to the consoling ending, this is as I feel, together with Bernstein’s from New York from 1975, the performance that is most convincing and the one I keep on coming back to the most. Leave it to Kubelik to end his Mahler cycle on a completely positive note!
Rafael Kubelik’s natural and unforced Mahler cycle has stood the test of time almost as well as Leonard Bernstein’s. From the wonderful readings from the Wunderhorn period to the sublime Adagio from the Tenth, there isn’t a moment of dull music making in this set, and several of the individual interpretations deserve the very highest praise. Even the sound, though showing its age, is clear, up front with considerable impact, offering a wealth of detail some other surveys simply pass by. This is also one of the most economic cycles, as the performances, with the exception of the Third symphony, fit conveniently on 10 well filled discs. The playing of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is committed and heartfelt throughout, putting most premier orchestras to shame. Das Lied is considered the most personal of Mahler’s works. It represents a synthesis of the two great pillars in Mahler’s oeuvre, the symphony and the song. On the face of it, it is cycle of six orchestral songs. But at the same time, it features three protagonists: not just the two solo voices, but the orchestra as well, and its formal structure is symphonic in nature.

The two soloists on this recording are the best known for this work. They sing it all over the world with top orchestras to fabulous reviews and PentaTone is delighted to welcome them to their label. The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra has a splendid reputation for its Mahler performances mainly under previous Music Director Harmut Haenchen.

Marc Albrecht’s PentaTone release of Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde is among the finest modern recordings of this work, both for the depth of the interpretation and for the exceptional audiophile sound quality. This is Albrecht’s first recording of a Mahler work, and though he is known as a specialist in the operas of Richard Strauss, this clearly works to his advantage in Das Lied, which lies stylistically between a symphony, a song cycle, and an opera. The wonderfully seraphic Alice Coote and the intensely ardent Burkhard Fritz are highly dramatic in their delivery, and the vocal parts give the performance a theatrical air, especially because of the spacious acoustics around the voices make them seem almost operatic in the multichannel recording. The playing of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra is marvelously shaded and vivid, providing a subtle accompaniment that reinforces Mahler’s ever-changing expressions and giving Das Lied a richly burnished tone. The only problem with this recording is a trace of what seems like humming in Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde, which unfortunately was picked up in the highly sensitive DSD recording. Other than that flaw, this is an exceptional presentation that Mahler fans should eagerly seek out. ~~AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson

The music of Gustav Mahler, the Late Romantic composer on the threshold of modernity, has been a firm part of the repertoire of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks ever since the early 1960s, when the orchestra’s Mahler tradition was established by its former chief conductor Rafael Kubelik. BR-KLASSIK has already released Mahler’s First (as part of an audiobook CD) and Seventh Symphonies with Mariss Jansons, as well as the Ninth with Bernard Haitink. The young Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin is making his debut here on the BR-KLASSIK label with Mahler’s First Symphony. He is one of the most important representatives of a younger generation of conductors and, since his European debut in 2004, has already conducted such renowned orchestras as the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic. Yannick Nézet-Séguin is currently chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

This is Ivan Fischer’s second Mahler symphony for Channel Classics with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, his first being the Sixth recorded in February 2005. His opening to this Resurrection symphony, its hero’s Funeral Rites, is disciplined with touches of brusqueness in the brass. But as this is supposed to ask ‘Why did you live?’ I’m very aware of Fischer’s empathy for the visionary aspects of the movement, as if to answer ‘To experience all that’s lovely’.

Daniel Harding follows his first CD recording on the BR-KLASSIK label (Schumann’s Faust Scenes, BR-KLASSIK, 900122) with this live recording of Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. Counting Sir Simon Rattle and Claudio Abbado among his teachers, since 2005 he has constantly made a name for himself with spectacular concerts with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks as a guest conductor. In this live recording of 2014 from Munich’s Philharmonie im Gasteig, BR-KLASSIK presents one of Mahler’s most unusual symphonies. Its dark and complex score contrasts starkly with what appeared on the surface to be a happy and carefree phase of the composer’s life when he wrote it. The world-class conductor Daniel Harding demonstrates great artistic flexibility here; and with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, he encounters an ensemble that has been among the pioneers of Mahler performance ever since the Kubelík era of the 1960s.

Daniel Harding is no newcomer to the music of Gustav Mahler, having recorded the Symphony No. 4 in G major with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Deryck Cooke’s realization of the Symphony No. 10 in F sharp major with the Vienna Philharmonic. With that understood, one may question his choices in the Symphony No. 6 in A minor,”Tragic,” as recorded live with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, because the interpretation as a whole seems rushed and a bit impatient, leaving an impression of superficial treatment and missed opportunities. One may take issue with the sequence of the inner movements; indeed, many contemporary conductors offer the Andante moderato and Scherzo ordering, as does Harding, following Mahler’s performances, even though it’s reversed in the first published score, which makes better sense as a tonal scheme. However, if that were the only problem, it could still be an acceptable reading, but Harding is in too much of a hurry, pushing the musicians too insistently, skimming over inner details of the score, and doing little with the atmospheric tone colors that, in other hands, make this symphony magical. While this performance is still listenable and suitable for study purposes, it’s unlikely to be anyone’s top choice, and this recording must contend with many great renditions of superior quality and musicianship. –AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson

About the Mastering :: Four engineers at Abbey Road Studios in London have remastered these historic EMI recordings from their original analogue sources for release in pristine hi-def. Between them, Simon Gibson, Ian Jones, Andy Walter and Allan Ramsay have many years of experience remastering archive recordings for EMI and other record labels. The process always starts with finding all of the records and tapes in EMI’s archive in London and comparing different sources and any previous CD reissues. We consult each recording’s job file, which contains notes about the recording made by the engineer and producer. For example, this sometimes explain why there is more than one set of tapes to choose from. All of the tapes are generally in good condition and we play them on our Studer A80 π inch tape machine, after careful calibration of its replay characteristics.
In order to have the best digital remastering tools at our disposal for the remastering, we transfer from analogue to the digital domain at 96 KHz and 24-bit resolution using a Prism ADA-8 converter and capture the audio to our SADiE Digital Audio Workstation.

Fischer’s performance of the Sixth is quite similar to Abbado’s recent live recording for DG. Textures are generally light and transparent, with a swift opening march that, by the same token, never sounds unduly rushed or trivialized. The andante comes second, not the best option in my view, but Fischer has the intelligence to treat it as a true andante, and not as an adagio (which is a more legitimate possibility when it’s placed third). However, in contrast to Abbado’s boring Berliners, Fischer’s orchestra plays better, and he’s much better recorded. Just listen to the characterful brass in the coda of the first movement, with a particularly fine first trumpet, or the splendid woodwinds in the trios of the scherzo. The emphasis on fleetness never compromises expressivity, as happens in Berlin.

Digitally remastered and expanded super deluxe four CD edition of Public Image Limited’s 1986 release issued in a square card box with de-bossed artwork including a 72 page booklet together with an exclusive poster postcards. With it’s striking minimalist generic style artwork, Album arrived in February 1986. Written by John Lydon and produced with Bill Laswell (with music for some tracks co-written with Jebin Bruni and Mark Schulz from the 1984-85 PiL live band) the album was recorded in Autumn 1985 in New York with prolific session players such as Steve Vai, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tony Williams and the legendary Cream drummer Ginger Baker. The album only took three weeks to record, followed by a week of mixing. John Lydon later remarked that Album was, “almost like a solo album” as he was working on his own with several hired musicians. Jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman came into the studio while the album was being recorded and commented that Lydon sang like he played the saxophone. Lydon said it was, “still the best thing anyone’s ever said to me.” Album peaked at #14 in the UK charts and features perhaps the most famous PiL track ‘Rise’, which peaked at #11. As well as rare and unreleased mixes from the album and single’s the deluxe edition includes the original demos recorded pre-Laswell with the 1984-85 PiL live band all of which are previously unheard. Two 12″ mixes of John Lydon’s groundbreaking collaboration with hip hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa are also included as bonus tracks.

Digitally remastered and expanded super deluxe four CD edition of Public Image Limited’s seminal second album, originally released in 1979. With all lyrics written by John Lydon Metal Box was recorded with original PiL members Keith Levene and Jah Wobble. Original drummer Jim Walker had left, to be replaced by a succession of drummers. Metal Box came out less than a year after PiL’s debut Public Image: First Issue yet it was nothing like it’s predecessor. Things had changed, and so had PiL. While outside pressures mounted PiL channeled their energies (negative and positive) into a record that would set them apart back in 1979, and indeed today in 2016. Whether it be John’s powerful and passionate vocals; Keith’s wailing guitar and melodic synths; Wobble’s sub-disco reggae basslines; or the crashing rhythm that holds it all together, Metal Box has many strengths. The album was originally released as three 45rpm 12″ singles housed in a metal film canister as made by The Metal Box Company in London’s East End; hence the name. The super deluxe edition, also housed in an embossed metal box, includes rare and unreleased mixes from the recording sessions, along with B-sides and BBC sessions, a live recording from a now legendary unplanned show at Factory Records Russell Club in Manchester arranged on the day of a Granada TV appearance and exclusive posters and postcards.

[ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK] , (Disc 10) RUBBER SOUL, (Disc 11) YESTERDAY AND TODAY, (Disc 12) REVOLVER, (Disc 13) HEY JUDE. These albums were originally issued between 1964 and 1970 by Capitol Records, Apple Records, and United Artists in the United States. These new releases seek to replicate the unique listening experience heard by Americans at the time by preserving the sequences, timings, and artwork found on the albums. Capitol’s engineers in the 1960s took great care to produce what they believed to be the best possible sound for the playback equipment in use at that time. Due to the limitations of the record players of the day, engineers often compressed the sound by raising the volume of the softer passages and lowering the volume for the louder parts of the songs. They also reduced the bass frequencies since too much bass could cause the record to skip. In some cases, reverb was added to the tracks to make them sound more “American.” The CDs are packaged in miniature vinyl sleeves that faithfully recreate the original U.S. LP releases down to the finest detail, including the inner sleeves. 11 original U.S. albums presented in both mono and stereo. Hey Jude and The Beatles’ Story are in stereo only. A Hard Day’s Night [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack], The Beatles’ Story, Yesterday And Today, Hey Jude and the U.S. version of Revolver are presented on CD for the first time. Yesterday And Today features the original album cover of The Beatles posing with raw meat and baby dolls. The package also comes with a collectible sticker of the subsequent Yesterday And Today cover art. Also included is a 64-page booklet which includes a new essay examining the U.S. albums and their historical significance, written by American author and television executive Bill Flanagan. The box set’s dimensions are: 6 inches wide x 6 1/8 inches tall x 3 inches thick.

2016 four CD set. This 56 track box set contains the first four studio albums recorded by The Glitter Band during the heyday of Glam, 1974-76. Disc One is the glam rock masterpiece Hey! Which spent three months in the UK National Charts, eventually peaking at #13. It features the hit singles ‘Angel Face’ (UK #8, Germany #8, Australia # 2) and ‘Just For You’ (UK # 10, Germany #35) plus a bonus non LP B-side. The second CD is the Rock N Roll Dudes album which hit #17 in the UK in May 1975. The hit singles ‘Let’s Get Together Again’ (UK. #8, Germany #19) and ‘Goodbye My Love’ (UK. #2, Germany #32) are included alongside two non LP B-sides. Listen To The Band is Disc Three and it includes the hit singles ‘The Tears I Cried’ (UK. # 8, Germany # 35, Australia # 5), ‘Love In The Sun’ (UK # 15) and ‘People Like You And People Like Me’ (UK # 5, Germany # 14) as well as the USA Top 100 “Makes You Blind” and the non-charting ‘Alone Again’. The final CD is 1976’s Paris Match album which includes the singles ‘Look What You’ve Been Missing’, ‘Lay Your Love On Me’ and ‘She Was Alright’. The album also now comes in it’s Glitter Band sleeve rather than The G Band one. The clam shell box also contains a 20 page booklet with detailed liner notes plus numerous pictures of singles from around the globe to get collectors updating their wants lists.
